Ranky Tanky Shows Us the Gullah Music of the Southeast

In the Weis Center’s second free outdoor performance of the season, audiences were treated to the lively, upbeat, and spiritual music of Charleston, S.C.’s own Ranky Tanky. In a pre-performance talk, the band explained the importance behind their church and family influences and how they work to keep Gullah culture alive. Ranky Tanky certainly has a rock and roll vibe to their performance style, a testament to their playing of modern developed instruments, but it is clear that listeners can hear the ghost of older instruments and sounds reminiscent of early Gullah culture. Art at The Weis Center Preview: Dust & Light

The Color of Sound exhibition has been livening up the Weis Center’s lobby since the fall, although soon a new exhibit will greet guests whenever they pay a visit to the Weis Center beginning March 20th and running through September 10th. As part of Art at the Weis Center, a partnership with the Samek Art Museum, the exhibition Dust & Light: Images of PA Coal Communities will debut, featuring a collection of photographs from artist Jack Delano. Art at The Weis Center Presents The Color of Sound

If you’ve stopped by the Weis Center recently, you’ve probably noticed something’s different. The Performing Arts Center’s lobby is boasting a new collection of art, thanks to its partnership with the Samek Art Museum. “The interplay between music and visual art goes back to the pre-histories of both forms and spans cultures and continents,” Samek Director Richard Rinehart’s curatorial statement reads. “Language often becomes involved in the dance between the two art forms as they borrow terms from one another.
